Amusingly, not one of this year’s contenders for Best Art Gallery quite identifies as a gallery. While Hopscotch aptly bills itself as a commercial “brand” with locations in San Antonio and Portland, Oregon, both Contemporary at Blue Star and Ruby City consider themselves contemporary art spaces that contain multiple galleries. (Forgive the technical digression as we tip our hats to the many deserving artist-run galleries which make San Antonio’s art scene tick.) Situated in an office building off Travis Park, Hopscotch beckons with neon energy, a trendy gift shop and a full bar to boot. While falling in line with other so-called “Instagram museums” such as Meow Wolf and Otherworld, Hopscotch actually does a commendable job of including local talent in its eye-catching exhibits and has collaborated with the likes of Ansen Seale, Gary Sweeney, Ana Hernández Burwell, Justin Parr, Amada Claire Miller, Los Otros and Essentials Creative. Known for experiential, kid-friendly displays involving dazzling lighting effects, cinematic sounds and interactive elements, Hopscotch begs to be captured (charge that cellphone). And at $24 a pop, it’s also the priciest “gallery” in town.

Winner: The DollHaus
instagram.com/thedollhaussatx

The DollHaus celebrates creativity through their burlesque and dance performances, as well as their exclusive classes. Many of their past performances have been held at the swanky Havana Hotel bar, while the venue’s terrace is reserved for teaching the public how to feign school glamour and the bump-and-grind at $15 dollars a pop. Keeping a rather low online profile, their shows take on the mystique of backroom speakeasys — epic engagements on the down-low held just before the magic hour.

The LOL Comedy Club has topped the Best Of list for more than a decade, so it’s safe to say it’s a dominant force in SA’s comedy scene, especially since it’s one of the few clubs here that’s consistently booking big names in the industry. Earlier this month, LOL welcomed Kevin Nealon (Saturday Night Live). This week, Mike Epps (The Hangover) is taking the spotlight. Other headliners coming to LOL this year include Jay Pharoah, D.L. Hughley, Marlon Wayans and Steve Hofstetter.

The history of the San Pedro Playhouse is fascinating – formed as the San Antonio Little Theatre in 1927, housed in a faithful replica of the long-demolished Old Market House in 1930, and now one of the leading artistic hubs in the city. The Playhouse “fosters a thriving arts community, contributing to the region’s vibrancy and creativity.” Currently, the Playhouse is performing the feel-good musical Hairspray through Aug. 17. The 2025 season will continue with the shows Real Women Have Curves, Disney’s Frozen and The Frosty Follies: A Holiday Cabaret. In 2026, mark your calendar for shows including Dreamgirls, Twelfth Night, Steel Magnolias and Evita.
